- The backing must be 4" to 5" larger than the quilt top on all 4 sides. This means it should be 8" to 10" larger than the top in both directions.
For example: If your quilt top measures 90" x 90" the backing should measure at least 98" x 98". If you are providing the batting, it also must be 6" to 8" larger than the quilt top. We recommend higher-quality battings. Some are made with uneven density or are too fragile and may shred in handling. Others may beard and spoil your quilt. We do have batting - please refer to our price list. - Quilt top and bottom should be separate. Please DO NOT pin or baste layers together. If you provide your own batting, that must be separate also.
- Quilt top and bottom must be squared, pressed and all threads cut. The use of sheets as backing is strongly discouraged.
- Press the seams flat.
- Please insure that your piecing and borders lie flat. Longarm quilting will not "fix" misaligned patchwork or the uneven borders that can cause your quilt to have puckers or tucks when quilted. Your quilt will be as free of pleats, fullness or tucks as your piecing allows.
- Mark the top of quilt with a safety pin. Do the same with your backing if it is a directional fabric or if the direction of your backing is important.
- Let us know if quilt top should be centered on quilt bottom. Otherwise quilt top and quilt bottom edges will be lined up and excess material will be at bottom of quilt.
